Faith Christian Academy recently wrapped up its annual J-Term, a unique three-day immersive learning experience held this year from October 13–15. Among the diverse offerings—ranging from Archery and Forensic Science to Pickleball—was a standout pottery course led by master potter Thomas Killian of KilianWare Pottery.

Hands-On Craftsmanship

Thomas Killian, a Chatham local and the officially commissioned potter for the 250th Commemoration of the American Revolution (VA250), spent time mentoring students in grades 6–10. The session provided a hands-on look at the technical and creative aspects of pottery, moving beyond the traditional classroom setting to expose students to specialized craftsmanship.

A Legacy in Clay

The collaboration offered more than just an art lesson. Killian is currently working on a partnership with VA250 (running through 2030) to produce limited-edition commemorative pottery that celebrates Virginia’s diverse history. By sharing his expertise, Killian helped students connect with a historical craft that remains a vital part of Virginia’s cultural identity today.

The Spirit of J-Term

For 15 years, Faith Christian Academy’s J-Term has aimed to spark curiosity and develop a lifelong love for learning. As Guidance Director Lisa Moore noted, these experiences are designed to propel students toward "new opportunities and ideas," bridging the gap between hobbyist passion and professional expertise.
